Given theglobal challenges facing humanity, nothing is more dangerous thanthe refusal to communicate that we encounter today in differentforms of religious and ideological fundamentalism.
Habermas argues that in order to engage in this dialogue, twoconditions must be met: religion must accept the authority ofsecular reason as the fallible results of the sciences and theuniversalistic egalitarianism in law and morality; and conversely, secular reason must not set itself up as the judge concerningtruths of faith. This argument was developed in part as a reactionto the conception of the relation between faith and reasonformulated by Pope Benedict XVI in his Regensburg address. This volume includes Habermassessay, the contributions of his interlocutors and Habermass replyto them.

An Awareness of What is Missing: Faith and Reason in a Post–secular Age by Jürgen Habermas
The problem is that a political structure that welcomes all worldviews into the marketplace of ideas, but holds itself aloof from any and all of them, will have no basis for judging the outcomes its procedures yield. Worldviews bring with them substantive long-term goals that serve as a check against local desires.
Worldviews furnish those who live within them with reasons that are more than merely prudential or strategic for acting in one way rather than another. The liberal citizen is taught that he is the possessor of rights and that the state exists to protect those rights, chief among which is his right to choose. So what will supply the strength that is missing? The answer is more than implied by the reference to heaven.
